Meg

As always seems to happen when I comment on your blog, I just wrote a really long reply and then it wouldn't let me post it, then I lost it completely!

Anyway, I was saying that you have inspired me to read Maus and Sad Book. I've read boy in striped pyjamas and of course had the same reaction as you.

The book that springs to mind as a book that made me cry isn't a children's book; The Shack, for me, was an incredible book, even though I am an athiest. I cried like a baby the whole way through and it touched me quite profoundly. It's one of those books that I can remember 4 years on exactly where I sat to read it, the music I listened to whilst I read it, and the exact way I felt whilst reading. It is one of those books that creates its own atmosphere that you can feel the moment you start turning the pages.

Another great blog post!

I read 'Maus' some years ago on your recommendation, hacing to overcome an aversion to graphic novels (comics, I thought) to do so, and found it deeply moving and literally beyond words. I'll certainly follow up your recommendation of 'A Monster Calls' on the strength of your previous choices.

Thanks Meg. I'll read The Shack now too.

Gill, let me know how you get on with A Monster Calls. Do kindle books come with illustrations? If not - get the book.

I think I cried a lot at the Help. Not sure whether I cried at Stripey Pyjamas but it I found it very distressing. Bel Canto was another one which I'm still upset about ... I'm trying to think, I'm sure I cry at books a lot. I have Room waiting to be read atm, have wanted to read it for ages, but am putting it off and putting it off as I'm sure I'm going to find it too distressing ...

PS that bit about Eddie makes me well up.

Not sure I can read the monster one as just reading the excerpt there has made me feel a little anxious and sad... Funny how so many things hit you so much more deeply once you are a mum.
